DIY Mini Christmas Doodle Grid — Step-by-Step Guide

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get creative with festive drawing and DIY ornament ideas. In this Christmas drawing tutorial, we’re excited to invite our talented artist Katie to share a step-by-step guide to creating cheerful holiday artwork using Ohuhu acrylic markers. Whether you’re designing holiday cards, ornaments, or simply enjoying some cozy creative time, this tutorial is packed with ideas you can easily adapt. You can also watch the full video on our YouTube channel. And if you’re joining our Tiny Holiday Challenge, this tutorial is a great source of inspiration to help spark your own festive creations.

Step 1: Set Up Your Grid

Create your mini doodle grid on paper, cardstock, or in a sketchbook. This keeps everything neat and makes it easy to fill each box with cute Christmas sketches. I made mine in my Ohuhu sketchbook (8.3 x 8.3 inches), with each square roughly 2.60 inches.

Step 2: Sketch Lightly

Choose a few simple festive doodles—like a tree, candy cane, gift box, snowflake, or ornament. Quick Tip: Sketch very lightly with a pencil. Light lines won’t show through once you add your markers.

Step 3: Block In Your Colours

Start filling in each doodle using your lightest colours first. This gives you a soft, clean base to work on.

Step 4: Build Depth With Layers

Quick Tip: Slowly layer medium tones, then finish with your darkest shades. This creates smooth shading and richer colour.

Step 5: Repeat the Process

Repeat the previous steps for each grid.

Step 6: Add Details & Highlights

Use the white 101 acrylic pen to add little details, patterns, or highlights to bring each doodle to life.

Step 7: Finish Your Grid

Once all the boxes are filled, step back and admire your mini Christmas collection! You can frame it, turn it into a card, or post it on socials.

Why I Love Using Ohuhu Acrylic Markers for This DIY

Ohuhu acrylic markers are honestly the perfect supply for this Christmas doodle grid. They’re super vibrant, glide on smoothly, and give you that nice, even coverage you want for small festive drawings. The colours layer really well too — you can start with your lightest shade and build up darker tones without the paper getting patchy. They don’t bleed, they dry quickly, and the nibs are great for both tiny details and bigger areas. I also love that they work on so many surfaces, so you can recreate this same design on ornaments, cards, wood, or anything Christmas-themed. They’re affordable, easy to use, and make your artwork look clean and professional every time.
